Who we are

APR was established in November 2006 by Roger Austin and Gary Heslop, two actuaries whose careers span a wide range of roles within the life and pensions sectors.

Roger Austin, Founding Partner

Roger graduated from Heriot Watt University in 1992 with a BSc (Hons) in Actuarial Maths & Statistics, qualifying as a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries in 1994. After six years working in a large life insurance company performing roles in a number of areas including reporting, compliance and as a Scheme Actuary, Roger joined a company providing business process outsourcing to the financial services sector. Here he held a number of senior management positions including head of quality and head of technical, head of actuarial placements, and also had operational responsibility for a team of 250 actuaries across eight countries. He founded APR in 2006 with Gary Heslop and is chiefly responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with our clients and new sales. Entrepreneurial by nature, Roger particularly enjoys developing innovative solutions for clients. He has a passion for travel and new experiences, and has been known to try bungee jumping, gorge-swinging and abseiling, as well as participating in the occasional Guitar Hero session.

Gary Heslop, Founding Partner

Gary has been a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries since 2006. He gained his initial actuarial experience at a pensions consultancy before returning to his studies and graduating with a PhD in Statistics from Birmingham University in 1998. He subsequently joined an outsourcer where he met Roger and their relationship (strictly business) flourished. While there, Gary was responsible for setting up the graduate recruitment and development scheme, managed the development of user-developed software and oversaw the quality of services across the business; all skills that are commonly applied in his work for APR. Gary has experience dating from 2003 in providing actuarial placement services to clients and within APR has primary responsibility for the management of our resource pools and development of technical material. A natural comic with a gift for timing, his mastery of punnery is a joy to behold.

Doreen Legge, Administration Manager

Doreen has a wealth of experience covering many areas of business including sales, customer service and administration. Prior to joining APR she worked for an outsourcing company for almost ten years alongside both Roger and Gary where she had operational responsibility for the company’s busy administration centre. Managing around fifty staff, Doreen ensured that her department successfully met the (often challenging) targets to enable clients to meet their FSA deadlines. A significant part of this role involved her liaising closely with over 200 actuarial contractors, with whom she developed a strong rapport and mutual respect, and many of these contractors now form part of APR’s available resource pool. At APR, Doreen is responsible for all aspects of administration and liaises regularly with our employees, contractors and clients. She has a straightforward and unfussy approach to achieving results and getting the job done.
